From 23 June 2025, a new weight loss medication – Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) – is being made available across England, but only for a small group of people at highest risk due to obesity.
⚠️ In the Black Country, GPs cannot yet prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss. Local NHS services are currently working hard to build a specialist community pathway to safely offer this treatment.
👥 Who may be eligible first (once services go live):
- BMI ≥ 40 (or ≥ 37.5 if from a minority ethnic background)
- Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea (on or unsuitable for CPAP)
- AND 3 or more of the following:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease
- High cholesterol (dyslipidaemia)
📌 Please don’t contact your GP about Mounjaro for weight loss yet. They can’t prescribe it or refer you until the new service is launched.
💬 Support will include diet, exercise and behaviour change help – not just medication.
👉 We’ll keep you updated when the pathway opens.
✅ Note: Mounjaro is already available on prescription for people with type 2 diabetes – this new update only relates to weight loss use.
Thank you for your patience as we prepare to launch this exciting new service safely and fairly across the Black Country 💙
