Pharmacy First Minor Ailments Scheme
Pharmacy First is a scheme to treat common ailments, that operates in participating pharmacies in the area covered by West Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, and Wolverhampton.
It enables patients to access a free medicines service without having to visit their doctor, accident and emergency or the walk-in centre. There are rules of access, as well as requirements for pharmacies and their pharmacists. The rules are:
- The scheme is available to patients exempt from prescription charges who are registered with a participating general practice in Dudley, Sandwell and West Birmingham and Wolverhampton CCG areas/
- Visits are limited to six times in a twelve-month period.
- The scheme is only for the treatment of a current common ailment and not to restock medicines.
- The patient will need to attend the pharmacy personally.
Many medical conditions get better on their own and may be treated successfully at home. A pharmacist may be able to help and advise you about over the counter medicines.
Coughs and Colds
- These are caused by viruses and antibiotics are of no use in their treatment.
- Treatment consists of taking recommended doses of paracetamol for the temperature and aches. Also make sure to drink plenty of fluid.
- Hands transfer germs. Wash your hands regularly .
- If you are given antibiotics, please try to take them at the same time each day and make sure you complete the course.
Diarrhoea and Vomiting
- In adults and older children this will usually get better on its own. Treatment consists of replacing the fluid lost and resting the digestive system by not eating solids for 24 hours.
- Replacement drinks are available from the chemist.
- Any severe pain or high fever, discuss with your doctor.
- Diarrhoea and vomiting in small babies and young children should be treated with caution, always ask for advice from a doctor in case it is necessary for the patient to attend surgery.
- Wash your hands regularly and wait for 48 hours before returning to school/work.
High Temperatures >38°C
- These are common with mild infections.
- Paracetamol syrup should be given to small children. If they are hot, sponge with tepid water to cool them.
- If a temperature is very high and does not come down with the above treatment, please consult the doctor.
Backaches and Strains
- Many acute strains will respond to a few days rest and take a suitable painkiller for the pain.
- Backache will usually respond to a few days spent lying on a firm bed on your back.
- If the symptoms persist, consult the doctor.
Sprains
- Apply a cold compress containing ice for 15 to 30 minutes several times to reduce swelling.
- Apply a firm crepe bandage, elevate and rest the sprain.
Sharing Medication
- Do not share your medication with anyone.
- Especially do not give adult medication to young children even if it is a smaller dose.
- Adult medication is specifically for adults and is significantly stronger then a child’s.
- Always use children’s medication which is formulated specifically for them unless directions are clearly given.
